Which Motorhome Is Right For You?
Written by motorcycleadvisor on September 30th, 2010Does the image of sleeping on the ground inside a tent come to mind when you think about camping? Well, camping does not have to be like that if you do it in a motorhome. Then it becomes camping in luxury.
Motorhomes are available in a range of shapes and sizes. At the least expensive end of the range you can get campers configured for the back of a pickup truck – known as a truck camper. Do not let their small size fool you into thinking you will miss out on amenities. They have a complete kitchen, shower, toilet, and beds fitted inside.
Perhaps you want something bigger. How about a van conversion known as a Class B motorhome. In its basic form this is a cargo van that is converted into a proper camping motorhome. You get more head room in this type of vehicle because of its raised roof. Inside they have the same, but somewhat better amenities as the truck camper.
On now to the Class C motorhome. From the front it resembles a pickup truck, but the resemblance stops there. There is a sleeper extension over the cab. From the back it looks like a typical motorhome that you see on the roads every day. Essentially a cargo box that has windows, but far more handsome. And it has the kind of amenities that you would find at home – bathroom, bedroom, living room and kitchen. Which means you could happily live in this class of motorhome.
Next we step up a notch to Class A motorhomes. With these you get luxury and plenty of space. A Class A motorhome is similar to a small one bedroom apartment… but with wheels. Everything that you need for a home is already fitted. The luxury begins with the large queen-sized bed, and carries through to the dining area that comfortably seats four adults. The kitchen is equipped with a cooking stove, microwave oven, and a nice sized fridge to keep your food fresh. Many of the kitchens in Class A motorhomes even have ice-makers, which is a nice touch to have when traveling through hot areas.
Your next choices to consider are trailers. There are two types of trailer – travel trailer and 5th wheel trailer. The travel trailer can be easily pulled by a large sedan or an SUV. For a 5th wheel trailer you will need to hook it up and pull it with a pickup truck at the very minimum. With each of these trailers you will get both the comfort and luxury that you would find in a Class A motorhome. Plus the benefit that a trailer is a lot cheaper.
Of course, these motorhomes can be bought new or used. You will find many good used bargains once you start looking. Whether you decide to go for used or new, before you buy make sure you do some research first. Find out all you can about motorhomes and RVing life. You will find a huge amount of information just by visiting various RV forums on the Internet.
Visiting a couple of RV shows will also be worthwhile. Big RV shows are held all year round, and you will find many dealers and vendors displaying the full range of motorhomes and the latest motorhome accessories. Also look out for smaller local RV shows which are normally put on by local dealers in and around your area.
Typical new motorhome prices can go up to $300,000, possibly more. But you do not have to spend anywhere near that kind of money if you buy a used motorhome. For under $10,000 you could easily buy a 34 foot used Class A motorhome.
Used or new, there is one last thing for you to consider – the fuel efficiency of the motorhome. A rule of thumb is the older and bigger the vehicle is, the more fuel it will drink. 5 to 8 miles per gallon is typical for a lot of older motorhomes. 7 to 10 miles per gallon is likely for mid 1990s vehicles. A new motorhome will probably get around 12 mpg.
Going camping in a motorhome is so much more fun and convenient than a tent. Once you do it, do not be surprised if you get bitten by the motorhome bug – it happens to most of us who try RVing.
