Living in Chicago
Written by motorcycleadvisor on November 27th, 2011In Chicago, there is something great to do, eat, or see for everyone. There is so much to do, see, buy, eat, and experience that it is pretty much impossible to do, see, buy, eat, and experience it all in one visit. Or even a couple. In fact, who those who have visited the city have not dreamed of living there and spending your evenings and weekends dancing, listening to live music, sipping martinis, and drinking beer at a pub?. And while it is great for all of these things, there is one very important thing to consider and keep in mind…and that is the cost of living in Chicago.
Chicago has something to suit your preference, whether it’s beer, DJs, house parties, bands, sports franchises and some of the world’s best dining. And because of this popularity and attention, the sounds, as you can imagine, of living in Chicago is very loud. How loud, you might ask? As a bustling busy city packed full of citizens and visitors, traffic, and business you might wonder whether any vehicle even has a Chicago muffler!
When you think about buying a house or renting or leasing an apartment in Chicago, don’t just consider the price of it. Yes, pricing is important…but for your sanity, so is location and environment…especially the noise in that location and environment. Some studio apartments, that may or may not be in a good part of the city or especially nice, ask anywhere between seven hundred and nine hundred dollars a month – and that is not including the utilities, such as gas, water, and electric – that you will have to pay. But as stated before, don’t just look at the pricetag…look at the neighborhood. Will you be surrounded by noise because other homeowners and apartment owners own vehicles without Chicago mufflers?
Want something smaller? One bedroom apartments are often in the range of sixteen hundred to seventeen hundred a month, so you might pay even more. Larger homes in Chicago will blow your mind when you look at the price tag and they could even be in loud, poor areas of town. When you get up into the size of a two or three bedroom apartment, you are looking at prices as high as three thousand dollars a month. And houses and condos in the city are definitely pricier than you will find in other cities. But like so many other areas of the country, right now Chicago’s economy is in poor condition and movers should be aware. You could get a real deal on a beautiful place in an area that’s not too loud or dangerous. There is a consolation in that there are many suburbs not too far from the city where apartment rent and housing prices are much cheaper and the sounds of Chicago are muffled.
And in general, the cost of food, service, and supplies are also more expensive in Chicago. Car repair in Chicago can significantly set you back, whereas in Detroit, Michigan or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania you would end up paying much less. And food, both groceries and restaurant dining, are also much pricier than you will see in many of cities of North America. But for so many, Chicago is completely worth it, so just make sure you keep in mind the cost of living and weigh it against how great the city really is.
